Posies Driven Dirty Tour 2009 Day 2

When you have a bunch of Hotrodders going anywhere in their hot rods the last thing any of them want to do is go slow. So, keeping all the PDDT cars close together so no one gets lost is sort of funny. Some one always get left at a redlight. In order to combat this dilemma, Wade and I decided to get up earlier Monday to scoot to Wallyworld to purchase a GPS. After bagging our direction doctor, we caught up with the Driven Dirty boys for a bowl of Oatmeal (I really ate 3 eggs, bacon and hashbrowns but tell my wife I ate healthy!).
We of course had to wait on somebody again but this time it was Scott Whitaker. Since his 41 Packard Clipper crapped out last night, he had to hook up with his office to load up his Dynasport on a trailer to bring it to him and pickup the crapped out Clipper. We finally got on the road to visit not one, not two, but three collections and shops before we were to head west toward Springfield.
The weather was pretty mild so I was able to hold the complainin’ down about my son in law leavin’ the side curtains off the truck to a minimum.
The first collection we gathered back up at belonged to George Payne. After slipping thru a non descript doorway into a very well lighted and prepared garage we found some of the best prepared cars you will see ever. His 32 Coupe was done “his way and exactly how I wanted it”. There were Galaxie 500’s, a killer 57 Thunderbird custom that was “the wife’s car”, a Bonneville record holder 32 roadster, 40 Ford Coupe, a really cool 41 Ford Custom w Carson top, new ZR1, Mini Coop and more! George is an unassuming sort of guy who really has some cool stuff!
We left his place and cruised down the street to Jack Stirneman’s shop. He and his bud’s do hot rods and all the cool stuff we all love! He had another buddy from a few miles away who had his 32 Ford pickup radical hot rod sitting in the shop. Thing about this truck that was really, really amazing was the cab was completely hand made out of aluminum.
Jack also makes this neat little 32 Ford Roadster kits out of cast aluminum parts. It looks like it is about 1/16th scale with really cool very precise detail. I think I have to have one!
While we were checking out all of Jack’s stuff, Posie put a new alternator on his Jagular. I guess he did not want any more ribbing about trailering his car on the Posies Driven Dirty Tour!
Kurt McCormick was present with his 41 Buick Custom w Carson top. He led us back to his house to check out his Customs. You remember the country song about being “country before country was cool”? Well, Kurt McCormick was “customs before customs were cool!”. He is the current owner of the legendary and historical Rod and Custom Magazine built hot rod custom truck in the very early 50’s and campaigned in hundreds of very early Rod and Custom Magazines. He has some of the Barris boys stuff (George and Sam, that is) and a gorgeous Custom Cadillac to die for. Kurt loves the history of lead sleds, customs and custom car builders and clearly should be considered an absolute expert on the subject too. …and he is a heck of a nice guy and a gentleman. Great collection Kurt!
Posie showed up about the time to leave Kurt’s to retake his position as our fearless leader. We, of course had to again stuff our faces first, cause as I mentioned before “we are eatin’ our away across USA!”.
It rained as we boogied the 220 miles to Springfield, and I swear if those Brookville guys had not loaned us some side curtains, we would have been wet ‘n cold! ( I am not going to mention anything at all about my son-in-law. ). Wade and I arrived in Springfield first so we clearly won the day! After checking in, we hopped over to the Hunters and Fishermans Paradise:….the original mega mecca Bass Pro Shop. It was cool to see it again, but after being cell call warned by my sweetie at home, I decided to leave empty handed and having bought nothing. Wade and I agreed that the saying our Pop’s taught us is really true ” a good buy is not a good buy, unless you need it!”
We caught up with Honest Mike and others at Tuby Ruesdays for a bite before hitting the hay for the day. Before I sign off, I learned a new sayin’ today, and I gotta share it with you. “That’s as cute as wool socks on a Banty Rooster“. I like it! Whacha think?
Tomorrow Wade n I make it a little closer to Vegas!

Corky,
I wish I had seen you guys drive through St. Louis. I saw you at Barrett-Jackson in Scottdale in January 2007, but I did not introduce myself. Anyway, what caused me to write was that I think you meant to say George and Kathy Lange (not Payne). I have seen Kathy’s ‘57 T-Bird couple of times – it is a nice car! I am envious because I have been a fan of all the people you mentioned above because of what they have done and continue to do to preserve the heritage of our hobby. Have a safe journey and keep up the great work.
Regards,
Gary Lewis
